O’s Notes: Saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom was the first musician to be commissioned by the NASA Art Program beginning an association that led to space-inspired music. Bloom also has an asteroid named after her, 6083janeirabloom! Her latest outer space project includes Dominic Fallaco (p), Mark Helias (b), and Bobby Previte (d). Sounds In Space makes me wonder what it really sounds like outside of the stratosphere. A google search suggests many eerie screeching sounds, howling winds, and burning gases, quite scary to Earthlings! But what Jane serves up is much more palatable, using known versus unknown sounds for far shorter periods of time. Ultimately, we end up with an adventurous, spontaneous, improvisational theme that approximates what we might dream outer space to be like, audibly.
