O’s Notes: Sam Newsome is a premier free-jazz saxophonist who recently released three live albums simultaneously. Sonic Journey is a solo effort recorded live at the Red Room in Chicago, an intimate small venue. It includes more melodic tones than squawking while maintaining a healthy dose of improvisation. Highlights are “Giant Steps” and “Monk’s Dream”.And there is some anticipated instrumental improvisation on the title track.
