O’s Notes: Ivo Perelman remains a busy musician in 2016 releasing several new recordings of avant grade jazz. On Soul Ivo forms a quartet with pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist Michael Bisio and Whit Dickey on drums. This was recorded on the heels of the Perelman/Shipp duo Corpo (3/3) with greater depth via the additional musicians. This team has recorded together on two prior releases and their familiarity breeds comfort and respectful handoffs. They seem to feel each other’s moods. Soul extends Perelman’s thrust into intervallic equality and we prefer it to Corpo. We suggest successive listening focusing on a different element each time. The view from different angles can be profound and insightful. Some will resonate more than others. That is the beauty of Ivo’s work!
