O’s Notes: Ark is a Russian born bassist who made his way to the US via Poland. Along the way he educated himself with various degrees and soon will get a doctorate in music. He also has a wealth of practical experience playing with polished veterans on the New York jazz scene. Ark developed an affinity for Latin music and hence this project of nine original compositions. The music of Brasil includes racy sambas and cool bossa nova. Both are well represented here in Ovrutski’s music delivered by a fine band including drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, Helios Alves (p), Craig Handy (sax, fl) and Jorge Constinentino (fl, sax). This is a vibrant session that is compelling evidence of the links between 19th century Russian and Brazilian music via Portugal.
