O’s Notes: Dave’s band Brass Ecstasy takes us back to roots of jazz in New Orleans with the opener “This Love Affair”. We get that feeling with the brass-laden ensemble consisting of Luis Bonilla (tb), Vincent Chancey (Fr. horn), Marcus Rojas (tuba), Newssheet Waits (d) and Douglas on trumpet. The power and sweetness of the brass harmonies sparkles on “Orujo” and “The View from Blue Mountain”. Dave wrote eight of the eleven songs bringing us a fresh palate of music presented in an atypical setting for 2009. The results are refreshing. Our favorite is “Bowie”, harnessing the full power of the brassy ensemble along with a marching band groove.
