O’s Notes: Looking for jazz in the Northwest, we find Fundamental Forces, guitarist Rik Wright’s contemporary jazz band from Seattle. The band is a quartet with James DeJoie (cl), Geoff Harper (b) and Greg Campbell (d, perc). Their signature sound captures the combined impact of guitar and clarinet out front on the melodies, sometimes in unison. There are five selections on Subtle Energy, each a freshened first take in this live studio session. Among the best are “Butterfly Effect” “Nonchalant ” and the title track.
