O’s Notes: Bob is a trumpeter and a jazz educator at DePaul University. His friends, all Chicagoans, are pianist Jim McNeely, Kelly Sill (b), Mark Colby (sax) and drummer Joel Spencer. Most of these guys also teach but all defy the educator adage; they all play very well, especially McNeely. Lark includes a few originals among mostly fresh arrangements of timeless standards. The duets with trumpet and piano were soothing, notably “A Child Is Born”. Lark fuels the fire as they swing on “Star Eyes with the full ensemble. These guys are crisp, focused and capable!
