O’s Notes: The Count Basie Orchestra is a sure treat but even more so with the plethora of fine vocalists on this session. Nanina Freelon starts with “Too Close For Comfort” surrounded by the powerful and precise band laced with sharp brass accents. Janis Seigel is up next singing and scatting on a swanky version of “Like Young”. They build momentum with Jamie Cullum belting out “Blame It On My Youth” before wrapping the session with the venerable Jon Hendricks singing “Blues On Mack Avenue”. There is a fine mix of vocals and instrumentals making this a richly balanced set and another of the years best!
