O’s Notes: Joe plays seven ballads in front of the WDR Orchestra directed by Michael Adams, a change of pace with good results. He plays both soprano and tenor saxophones breathing warm melodies into “Emperor Jones” and “His Dreams”. The strings and winds are lush and precise, making a glorious landscape for Lovano on “Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love”. They pick up the pace for “Alexander the Great”, a swinger before expanding into “The Dawn of Time”, a very dynamic piece. Symphonica is just that!
