O’s Notes: This edition in“The Art of The Improv Trio“features saxophonist Ivo Perelman with electric guitarist Joe Morris and drummer Gerald Cleaver. The liner notes speak of evolution when describing Perelman’s continuously evolving music, much like a chemistry experiment. This six volume series has Perelman as the common element, a highly reactive saxophonist that shows different characteristics in the presence of different musicians. Here he yields occasionally to melodies from Morris but is (as always) fueled by the reaction and the pair is frequently locked in together as on “Part 6”. Cleaver is the glue bridging the two players to make sense of what is sometimes almost off of the edge. There are nine parts to this movement, mostly energetic and daring, a good set.
