O’s Notes: Sam Newsome gives us a demonstration of all that can be done with a soprano saxophone on The Straight Horn of Africa: A Path to Liberation. This is a solo effort performed entirely by Newsome using loops, circular breathing and even extracting percussive sounds from his instrument. There are sixteen selections, each capturing different emotions and themes. Sam found the challenges presented in mastering soprano sax very liberating. His artistic inner self has been unleashed resulting in a transparent session that is much more than an exercise or random thoughts, it is well orchestrated and even exotic at times.
