O’s Notes: Chick composed The Continents, his second symphonic work cast in the light of classical legends and it is quite palatable to jazz listeners. The band is a large ensemble with a powerful and energetic quintet. There are six movements on the first disc that are symphonic, rich and creative essays – easy to appreciate. Highlights are many with great work from Steve Davis (tb), Hans Glawischnig (b), Tim Garland (woodwinds), Marcus Gilmore (d) and Corea (p). The orchestra was formed with the help of cellist Fred Sherry who serves as the concertmaster. Corea effectively integrates them into the performance. The second disc is straight ahead jazz; 5 songs are with Corea’s quintet and 11 are solo piano. They first 5 really pop, especially on the Latin pieces. Chick was searching for completion with the second disc that turns out to be unrelated. We’re not nearly as dissatisfied with his concerto and expect the next one to be even better!
