O’s Notes: It may seem unusual for a barbecue joint to be the theme and title for a jazz work and indeed it is. Gates Barbecue is a cornerstone and central gathering point for many who visit and live in Kansas City, the home of outstanding barbecue as well as great jazz. Bobby teaches at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC) and conducts their Jazz Orchestra for this recording. They perform seven of Watson’s compositions each inspired by the restaurant. The sound is dynamic and precise. We liked the layering on “The President’s Tray” and “Wilkes’ BBQ” featuring Watson with a sax solo.
