O’s Notes: The Harlem Nutcracker is David Berger’s adaptation of Ellington and Strayhorn’s rendition of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. He manages to bring yet another dimension to the music. Berger conducts this large ensemble through the jubilant music. He also employs a choir featuring Althea Rogers and Aria Hendricks on “Xmas Be The Place/Sing Out”. You can feel the good vibrations and controlled power of a big band throughout this fine set.
