O’s Notes: The Hitchhiker features Ivo Perelman on sax with vibraphonist Karl Berger. This follows their 2014 release of Reverie that was also a duo but with Berger playing piano. The vibraphone offers more resonance and fewer complex cords changing the feel and character of the music even with the same players. The resulting performance has Berger warming up the squawks and edges of Ivo’s sax leading to a more gentle presentation overall. It is not as blended as on Soul, Perelman’s duo with guitarist Joe Morris that was released simultaneously. We preferred Soul but both have merits.
