O’s Notes: Pittsburgh native Tania Grubbs sings with her quintet including David Budway (p), Ron Affif (g), James Johnson III (d) and her husband Jeff Grubbs (b). We make note that the fifth member of the quintet is Tania, and her vocals are well integrated into the music. She does a fine job with her seductive take on “Slow Hot Wind”. The instrumentation is well balanced with each musician adding just enough spark to support Grubs when she’s not on the mic. Notable examples are “Sound Of Love”, “Four”, and “I Can Tell You Are Always There”. The Sound of Love, leaves us in a good place, combining contemporary and traditional approaches over fourteen jazzy ballads.
