O’s Notes: This recording takes us back in time to the early 1900s and spans the entire century while being rooted in the spirit of New Orleans. The band includes Essiet Essiet (b), David Pleasant (d, vocals, harmonica), leader/producer Nick Russo (g, banjo), Miles Griffith (vocals), Betina Hershey Russo (g, vocals) and Gordon Au (t). The gutsy arrangement of “Caravan” typifies the music on The Very Next Thing. We also enjoyed Miles scatting on “In A Mellow Tone” and the clean mellow sound on “Manha De Carnaval”, a duet featuring Russo and Griffith. These are just a few highlights in a set with lots of color. The Hot Jazz Jumpers truly capture the essence of the music of the period presented in an embraceable form today!
