O’s Notes: Japanese trombonist Nanami Haruta is a student at Michigan State University studying with master trombonist, producer Michael Dease. She’s also already recording with Dease, bassist Rodney Whitaker’s Sextet, and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.’s Big Band! All three musicians appear on The Vibe along with Xavier Davis (p). Guest artist Chris Minami adds guitar on “Unchained Melody”. Haruta contributes three originals notably “Toshi” and “Heartstrings”. We also enjoyed “Algonquin”, “How It Goes”, and the title track. Nanami promises to make memorable music for a while.
