O’s Notes: Mitchell Jones is the writer and producer of these nine compositions. The swinging set was originally focused on the 1930s-40s era and evolved to musical depiction/narrative on war. A trio performs his music with Eric Allison (sax, cl), Sandy Poltarack (g) and Jamie Ousley (b). The absence of piano and drums is never an issue here and the trio delivers the message stated on the cover: ‘New Songs in the Style of the Swing Era’. There are moments of sadness as on “Pearl” followed by the upbeat bounce of “Willow Run” and “Rosie”. It is a refreshing, clean take on a segment of traditional jazz.
