O’s Notes: Guitarist Melvin Sparks has been around for decades playing funky jazz, soul, R&B and even influencing some hip hoppers. His band is Jerry Z (organ), Justin Tomsovic (d) and Cochemea Gastelum (sax). This Is It! features some of his best cuts like the boogaloo beats of “Bambu” and “Bounce”. These are infectious grooves that make you want to cut a rug. There are also a couple of cool covers notably “Heavy Fallin’ Out” and “My Girl”. This is timeless stuff!
