O’s Notes: Saxophonist Donald Harrison leads a trio with two living jazz legends, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Billy Cobham. This is their third album as a trio, a live set at the Blue Note in New York. They have good chemistry together and the spontaneity of the crowd fuels their creativity. Carter wrote three of the selections and contributes melodic lines and solos along the way though Harrison is generally out front. The absence of a rhythm instrument is unusual but these guys pull it off. We thought “Seven Steps to Heaven” was the best of the lot.
