O’s Notes: This is a spirited set of seven jazz classics performed Live at the Jazz Standard in New York. This is modern ragtime jazz if there is such a thing. Petrescu (p) is joined by Andreas berg (g), Dave Fink (b) and Mark McLean (d). They waste no time turning up the heat as they open with “Cakewalk”. Marian dashes through the changes without missing a beat. berg takes the spotlight on “My Romance” with scatting to match his guitar solo as he turned the song from a ballad to a burner. He impresses us even more on his solo on “Blue in Green” as does Marian. “On the Trail” features Fink with a spirited solo and shadowing Petrescu through the fleeting changes. The song selection is well matched to the musicians for racy ballads, blues and burners. This was an energetic session that packed a strong punch all the way through. Petrescu capped it with an excellent solo performance of “Indiana”.
