O’s Notes: The trio is Joe Sanders (b), Justin Brown (d) and leader, pianist Gilman. The history behind this project started as a concert featuring rearranged Brubeck songs in 2001. It evolved to this recording with ten of Brubeck’s compositions. The rearrangement does a lot to bring the spirit of the music closer to the edge! The solos are highly energized, particularly on “Weep No More” and “For Lola”. The groove stays tight amidst strong accents, cymbal crashes and rolls from Justin especially on “Recuerdo”. Our favorite is “Curtain Time” anchored by Sanders. Overall this is a provocative session that works well.
