O’s Notes: Debbie Spring plays a 5-string viola with excellent tone, precision, and passionate flow on Tocamos. Keyboardist Hal Roland has dazzling piano solos on “Summer”, “Senegal”, and then on the Rhodes on “Mockingbird“. Spoken word comes from Eddie “Oriente” Balzola on the title track (both English and Spanish versions), initiating the Latin-tinged selection. Our favorite is “Fragile” featuring vocals by Roland. The recording has depth and a warm contemporary jazz groove that is fresh yet somehow reminiscent.
