O’s Notes: Davis leads a fine trio with bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton for Tone Paintings. They go around the horn on the opener “Mellow Mood”, an excellent preview of what is to come and it’s all good! This is the music of the late Dodo Marmarosa, a lesser known but formidable jazz pianist and composer. Other highlights are “Escape”, “Dodo’s Bounce” including a spirited exchange with Hamilton, and “Dary Departs”. Clayton fills in all of the blanks with a well-coordinated approach and solo on “A Ditty for Dodo”.
