O’s Notes: Lynn Riley makes her debut on the contemporary jazz scene with this funky cool set of ten catchy songs. The music is all-original composed by Riley and/or Rubin Edwards (b, keyboards, programming). They open with the funky beats of “Too Cool” followed by a little calypso on “Mining You”. We don’t ordinarily like an abundance of electronics but they manage to strike many different catchy riffs on this album making us overlook that absence of complete live instrumentation. Among the best are “Grover’s Groove”, the relaxing Caribbean beats on “Island Breeze” and “Tag You’re It”. Riley plays alto, soprano and tenor sax as well as flute on “Tierra del Sol” displaying her versatility. It is a good start.
