O’s Notes: Malone is undoubtedly one if the best jazz guitarists on the scene today. As the title suggests Triple Play is a trio with David Wong (b) and Monte Coleman (d) joining Russell. They provide strong support but this is Malone’s set and he is in top form playing warm tones and striking chord melodies that engage the listener. We liked the groove on “Sweet Georgia Peach” and the opener “Honeybone”, two of four Malone originals. Other highlights include “Butch and Butch”, “Mind Wine” and the bouncy “Tail Feathers”. Simply put, Malone is a pleasure to listen to over and over again.
