O’s Notes: Multi-instrumentalist, composer Nicholas Payton leads an all-Star trio with bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding and drummer Karriem Riggins on Triune (three in one). Payton’s primary instrument is trumpet, but he also handles keyboard duties here and invites a few guests to amplify the performance. The groove is solid and the mood is mellow. Nikki Glaspie adds vocals on “Ultraviolet”. Guests Ivan Neville (vocals, organ, Clavinet), Erica Falls (vocals), and Otis McDonald (vocals) join for, “#bamisforthechildren”, Black American Music (bam). Riggins’ funky beats and Spalding’s earthy bass work make a strong impression on a very good set.
