O’s Notes: This is beautiful music written by Joseph C. Phillips, conductor of Numinous, a large ensemble. Vipassana means seeing things as they are through direct observation. It is associated with a form of Buddhist meditation. Phillips’ music is peaceful enough to allow deep thought. It is also a reflection of his vast experiences. “Into all the Valleys Evening Journeys” is a dynamic piece with a solid rhythmic foundation. “The Nothingness that is the Source of Everything” includes vocal poetry that is harmonized into the music. All of the four pieces evoke a visual of our natural outdoors environment. This serves well for reflection or listening enjoyment.
