O’s Notes: Dr. Paul Austerlitz plays the bass clarinet, the one that looks like an extra long, skinny tenor sax! He does extensive research on Afro-Caribbean music, specifically emanating out of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.“Water Prayers for Bass Clarinet“is part of a trilogy called Marisa Twa: Vodou Jazz-Merengue.“Austerlitz leads a band featuring Benito González (p), Santi DeBriano (b), Isaiah Richardson (cl) and Royal Hartigan (d). Rozna Zola adds Earthy vocals to “Prayer for the Primal Wind”. They swing on “En-Art” and get funky on “Funkay-Be-Sea”. We also enjoyed the warm flow of “Lapriyé Djó” capping a different, intriguing set!
