O’s Notes: Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii is in rare form on Watershed appearing with Natsuki Tamara (t) and two Westerners, Andrea Perkins (accordion) and Curtis Hasselbring (tb). About two minutes into the opener “The Thaw” Tamara scared the beejeezus out of me coaxing what sounded like a scream out of his trumpet. This is modern free jazz with an eerie feel. The brass comes alive on “Soranbushi”. They use an abundance of sound effects most notably on “Limestone Cave”. We found solace in the “Estuary”, the soothing finale. This one is geared to Fujii’s eclectic Min-Yoh following.
