O’s Notes: New Orleans native Jon Batiste is known to many as the musical director on “The Late Show” but his musical career is much more than that, evolving from a musical family and performing since age 8. We Are takes a stab at the social restlessness of our nation with a view from within the Black community. There are soulful beats and meaningful lyrics as Batiste addresses the sentiments many us are feeling on “Cry”, “Freedom”, “If I Don’t Know 11”, and “Whatchutalkinbout”. The message resonates with the urban crew but all will benefit from the perspectives.
