O’s Notes: Michigan State alumnus, saxophonist Diego Rivera was emotionally impacted by the tragic shooting at his Alma mater in 2023. His thoughts inspired West Circle, leading an all-star quartet with Art Hirahara (p), Boris Kozlove (b), and Rudy Royston (d). They burn on “Both Siding”, and sooth us on the title track. We also enjoyed “Fungque”, “Frida”, and “The Maze”.
