O’s Notes: Paul Jost is a masterful writer, vocalist and also plays harmonica. He uses spoken word, straight ahead jazz voicing and adult contemporary approaches to express his takes of our current plight on the opening tracks of each of the two discs. We enjoyed his traditional arrangements of “Ev’rybody’s Talkin’”, “Gentle Rain”, “I Thought About You” and “Centerpiece” with cool solos around the band. It was all recorded live at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn between 12/8/20 and 4/13/21. While the variety of genres is initially appealing it’s the traditional selections that make While We Were Gone sizzle.
