O’s Notes: Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii performs in many different band configurations. For Zakopane she conducts her orchestra, a brass rich large ensemble (without piano) that pushes the limits with a lot of power. The inclusion of Natsuki Tamura (t) almost guarantees elements of free jazz and this is no exception. But the big band uses more structure than Fujii’s smaller groups while still allowing for ample amounts of improvisation. “Zee” has lots of air allowing full appreciation of Toshihiro Koike’s trombone solo and the exceptional band dynamics. We enjoyed the lead lines from Sachi Hayasaka on soprano and alto sax on several selections. Fujii wrote all of the songs with a subtle blue tone. The overall effect is an energetic, provocative session with a wealth of creativity.
