O’s Notes: Gato Libre is a quartet featuring Natsuki Tamura (t), Satoko Fujii (accordion), Kazuhiko Tsamura (g), Norikatsu Koreuasu (b). We’ve heard Tamura and Fujii playing together on numerous occasions. Usually Fujii is playing piano and the music is avant garde. Tamura composed these seven selections with an Eastern European bent, especially “Patrol”. His blue tones on trumpet blended with the accordion help state the case. They maintain their usual free spirit and improvisation with many solo passages. Koetasu’s bass solo prior to full engagement on “The Battle” is a prime example. This approach facilitates the listening experience for sure. The program is a highly accurate musical depiction of a series of events. It is yet another mode of free jazz emanating from Japan.
