O’s Notes: The Hot Club of San Francisco delivers a different take on traditional Yule time melodies. The theme is western stagecoach ragtime with hot strings all the way around led by Evan “Zeppo” Price on violin. It is the holiday album that Django never recorded! It comes off well thanks to a fresh and creative set of arrangements. Prime examples are “Don Rudolfo”, a nice twist on our red nosed friend and the swinging twist of “Jingle Bells”. Duo Gadjo (Isabelle Fontaine and Jeff Magidson) are the vocal duo featured on “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, a piece that fits in nicely with the mood of the season and the program. Other favorites are the bouncy “March of the Toys” and “The Christmas Song”. For sure this holiday collection is unique and well done.
