O’s Notes: Asian American pianist John Chin leads a polished trio for Sun of Music, a live recording at Smalls Jazz Club in NYC on August 5, 2020. They take their time putting soul and dynamics into the music. Drummer Jaimeo Brown and bassist Sean Conley shine on “Speak No Evil”. We also liked the fresh, open arrangements of “Pure Imagination”, and “Countdown” with a rousing solo by Brown. Chin’s work is solid throughout the set. He and his team represent the true essence of club jazz in New York.
