O’s Notes: In Africa, music is used to celebrate the wisdom of departed elders. Lawrence continues this tradition with Prayer For My Ancestors, his second release with a similar theme. His core band includes Henry Franklin (b), Nate Morgan (p) and Alphonse Mouzoon (d). They have a wonderful sense of swing that extends through the entire set with the exception of “Thokole”, a vocal with folksy underpinnings and the reflective title track. “Swinging In Exile” and “Linda G.” are prime examples that will get your groove going!
