O’s Notes: Turrentine was one if the first contemporary jazz sax players. His sound is sweet, gutsy and large. Sugar is a classic album in many respects. The lineup is incredible with bassist Ron Carter, George Benson (g), and a young Freddie Hubbard who plays an incredible solo on the title track! Add Lonnie Liston Smith on electric piano and you have a band of all-stars! They make great music with on “Impressions”, “Gibraltar” and “Sunshine Alley”. They wrap with a live version of “Sugar” that is worth the price o the CD alone!
