O’s Notes: Henry Franklin is an accomplished bassist, writer, producer and owner of Skipper Productions. He continually brings us the best in modern jazz. The Soul of the World is just that as Franklin puts together a performance that has roots on several continents the spirit is firmly energetic jazz as we know and enjoy in the US. Check out the brass on “Open Spaces ” to get the feel. Chuck Manning (sax), Gilbert Castellanos (t) and Nolan Shaheed (t) make their presence known throughout the set. Mom David adds vocalese on “Mahjong” and Karen Wilson sings “Sea Line Woman” against an earthy riveting bass line from Franklin. Theo Sanders (p) contributes three originals along with one from Franklin to balance 5 freshly arranged covers. The result is something new that rekindles old jazz spirits and launches us into the next chapter.
