O’s Notes: Ira Wiggins is the Director of Jazz Studies at North Carolina Central University. He plays tenor sax and flute on When Freedom Swings a 2-disc set packed with goodies. He plays with a strong cast including Cyrus Chestnut (p), Herman Burney (b) and Baron Tymas (g). The music swings and soothes the listener especially when Ira is ting flute. We welcome this softer approach that is seldom used on today’s jazz scene. Some may question the inclusion of a Holiday track on a Spring release but now days, we all create our own samplers so thank you Mr. Wiggins for “Christmas Time Is Here” without the plethora of overworked seasonal babble.
