O’s Notes: Australian pianist Ben Winkelman has been on the New Your Jazz scene for several years. He leads a trio with bassist Matt Penman and drummer Obed Calvaire. They expand to a quartet with guitarist Gilad Hekselman on 5 of the 9 selections, all Winkelman originals. “The Plague”, “Cliches”, and the upbeat “Heartbeat” are among the best. Penman shines on “The Wonky Waltz”, as does Hekselman on “Heartbeat” and “Machine”. Winkelman takes control on “Chilches” asserting his prowess along with his bandmates.
