O’s Notes: Shirantha Beddage is a new name for us but Momentum is his third release as a leader. Beddage is a talented reeds man, composer, educator and producer from Toronto, Canada. We hesitated classifying this on the traditional side of the Jazz Rulerª as he gets funky from time to time. His compositions are complex and syncopated with solid work that satisfies many palates. The songs with Mike Downs (b) and Mark Kelso (d) are more Modern Jazz/Hard Bop while Rich Brown (b) and William Kennedy (d) are more on the jazz-fusion side. David Restive plays piano on all eight selections. However you slice it, Shirantha presets an enjoyable, fresh set highlighted by “Centrifugal Force”, “Pork Chop” and “Drag and Drop”.
