O’s Notes: Emanating from Seattle, Washington, Syrinx Effect is billed as interstellar, Polk, funk jazz. The leaders are trombonist, composer Naomi Siegel and saxophonist Kate Olson. They use loops and electronics interlaced with infectious riffs and improvisation to create a stage that is much larger than what you’d expect to hear from a duo. It’s tough to classify the music but we’ll go with their billing and list it on the contemporary side of our Jazz Rulerª. “Crabwalk” and “Bottomfreders” are among the best of these brass-laden compositions.
