O’s Notes: Karl Berger (piano, vibes) and Jason Kao Hwang (violin, viola) are well-accomplished musicians and composers who team up for Conjure, an eclectic, ambitious, free jazz undertaking. They recorded the session at Berger’s home studio in Woodstock, NY on March 20, 2014. The spontaneous session was totally improvised but well coordinated and without the chaos sometimes associated with free improv. The duo share musical DNA and a level of respect that leads to a rich session that can be best described as haunting.
