O’s Notes: Alto saxophonist, composer and band leader Steve Slagle has a winner with Nascentia, his latest release. A key success factor in this recording is Slagle‘s engagement of his guest artists, letting them run, and take the spotlight. It sure works on the Nascentia Suite! Trombonist Clark Gayton adds a sweet solo on “All Up In It” followed by pianist Bruce Barth on “Drum Interlude” featuring Jason Tiemann. Slagle is back in the saddle on “Agama” featuring Jeremy Pelt (t) and Gayton. Next up is Ugonna Okegwo on “Bass Interlude”. They all dance on the rousing “New Note” in a rather satisfying session.
