O’s Notes: The Gospel According to Nikki Giovanni is a remarkable collaboration between the great poet and tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson. The program is collection of traditional, gospel hymns and spirituals morphed into jazz space by Jackson. The rhythm section is Jeremy Manasia (p), David Williams (b) and McClenty Hunter (d). Nikki recites spoken word beautifully on “Wade In The Water” and sings a tribute to Nina Simone on “Night Song”. Javon’s sax is warm, passionate and comforting. Both words and music are riveting.
