O’s Notes: German pianist Julia Hülsmann leads a quartet with Uli Kempendorff (t-sax), Marc Muellbauer (b) and Heinrich Köbberling (d) on The Next Door, her latest release. Each of the members contribute original works to the session adding to the variety in what turns out to be a rather sophisticated jazz-fusion set. We enjoyed Julia on “Valdemossa”, a soft ballad. Uli’s sax is sweet and rich on “Made of Wood” and “Wasp At The Window”, two of our favorites in an enjoyable set of twelve songs.
