O’s Notes: Bill Cole is an innovative jazz musician and educator who focuses on non-Western horns like the digeridoo, Chinese sona, Ghanian flute and Indian shenai. His music is an exploration of tonal harmonies and free, expressive improvisations. His band includes Warren Smoth (d, perc), Joseph Daley (tuba b-sax), Ras Moshe Burnette (sax, fl), Althea SullyCole (kora), Mali Obomsawin (b) and Taylor Ho Bynum (cornet, flugelhorn, shells). The musicians are peaceful, cooperative, and supportive, building and blending on each other’s thoughts. Listeners can engage and they aren’t locked out, rather invited in to the musical cloud. “The drum sounding a message…” is perhaps the most aggressive, but also the most intriguing of five selections!
